Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art, and theatre. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. While DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Due to her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
